CIOT-class scrubbers are once-through wet dust collectors for medium cleaning of dust-laden air in exhaust ventilation systems, excluding contaminants of a cementing nature and fibrous structure.
CIOT-Class Scrubber Designation
Example designation – “CIOT-5”, where:
- “CIOT” – developer: Sverdlovsk Institute of Occupational Safety;
- “5” – scrubber model number.
Design Advantages
The CIOT-class scrubber differs from CVP-class cyclones with a wet film in that the dust capture process includes not only deposition on the scrubber’s wet walls due to centrifugal forces, but also cleaning the air by spraying it with atomized water.
Design Features of CIOT-Class Scrubbers:
- increased bottom section slope to improve sludge removal efficiency;
- improved distribution of the supplied water along the walls;
- simplified swirler construction.
CIOT-class scrubbers are available in three types:
- Type I – a swirler provides a defined outlet flow direction: vertically downward;
- Type II – swirler of the “snail” (scroll) type;
- Type III – no swirler; air is discharged vertically upward.
The CIOT-class scrubber is a housing with an inlet nozzle and a swirler (except for Type III). The inlet nozzle has an inspection hatch for service and inspection. There are also two openings: one to monitor water flow when adjusting the operating mode, and the other for illumination.
The capacity of CIOT-class scrubbers ranges from 2,100 to 210,000 m3/h, the diameter of the cylindrical section is 750–5,722 mm, height is 1,441–8,985 mm, and weight is 100–8,700 kg. The optimum inlet velocity of the contaminated stream is 15–21 m/s; at these velocities, the cleaning efficiency is approximately the same. For wettable mineral dusts where the fraction of particles up to 10 microns is 55–60%, the separation efficiency reaches 95%. If the velocity drops below 14 m/s, the air stream does not atomize the water, which reduces cleaning efficiency.
Operating Principle
The operating principle is water atomization inside the dust collector. In a CIOT-class scrubber, dust from the air stream settles on the inner wet surface under inertial forces and is also captured by water sprayed by the air stream and directed downward. Water is supplied through the inlet nozzle to the bottom of the water distributor located at the top of the unit. To stabilize the washing water pressure, the scrubber is equipped with a head tank with a ball valve.
Advantages
- water savings;
- high cleaning efficiency;
- simplified swirler design.
Applications
The CIOT-class scrubber is widely used wherever effective removal of water-wettable dust from air is required without further physical changes to the air.
Operating Considerations
Since water is the main working medium in CIOT scrubbers, they efficiently capture hydrophilic dust pollutants. Note that the presence of foreign impurities in the cleaned air (e.g., fibers, cement) that can form hard, coagulated conglomerates with water greatly reduces the unit’s efficiency, and use in such conditions is not recommended. With these contaminants and high initial dust loads, there is a risk of malfunction because thick sludge can clog the unit or the discharge piping. The equipment should also not be used to remove dusts that dissolve in water forming hard-to-retain particles. Additional dilution of sludge with water eliminates the CIOT scrubber’s main advantage—water savings. CIOT scrubbers should be installed on the suction side.
