Air Curtains (Thermal Air Barriers)
Air curtains, also known as thermal air barriers, are a modern and efficient solution for maintaining indoor comfort. They are becoming increasingly popular in Ukraine, especially at the start of autumn, when keeping the cold, wind, and dust out becomes a priority.
Kyiv, being the capital and one of the northernmost cities in the country, uses air curtains extensively in shopping malls, business centers, hospitals, and administrative buildings. Let’s explore why they’re so effective, how they work, and how to choose the right one.
How They Work
An air curtain generates a strong stream of air, creating an invisible barrier between the outside environment and the interior space. This stream is often heated, keeping warm air inside during colder months.
Beyond temperature control, air curtains help block dust, insects, odors, and other airborne pollutants from entering.
Design
Air curtains come with either a water-based or electric heat exchanger:
- Water-based models – use hot water but tend to be less efficient.
- Electric models – heat the air quickly using electricity.
They can be installed horizontally (above the door) or vertically (beside the door). In high-demand locations, both types are used together for maximum efficiency.
Installation & Maintenance Tips
- Always install on the inside of the entrance.
- Position as close as possible to the doorway.
- Ensure the airflow fully covers the entrance width.
