Engine types
Depending on the type of current used the motors differ in units:
- alternating current:
- synchronous type;
- asynchronous type;
- direct current.
The first category includes synchronous and asynchronous motors powered by alternating-current power.
In a synchronous motor, the values of the rotation frequencies of the magnetic field and the rotor are equal. Based on the number of feeding phases, asynchronous motors are divided into one-phase, two-phase or three-phase motors. The third type of motors (three-phase) are the most popular ones. The principle of operation of these motors is based on the interaction between the rotating magnetic field of the stator and the currents induced by it in the rotor. The torque occurs when there is a difference of magnetic field rotational frequencies.
The electric motor of the second category is powered from a DC source. Such a unit consists of an inductor and an armature separated by an air gap. The magnetic field of the first element is formed by stationary magnets. The second element is a magnetic system consisting of separately placed wafers placed in the grooves of the winding and the collector. The armature, rigidly connected at the shaft, rotates around its axis.
